Dear friend,
C.S. Lewis famously said that the human race typically falls into one of two equal and opposite errors about demons. We tend to either have an excessive interest in them or we tend to not believe in their existence. For believing Christians who believe in the existence of demons at a theological level, our form of the latter error is to act as if we disbelieve in the existence of demons. The Bible text that we look at today [Luke 9:1-11] teaches about the mission that Jesus lays upon His followers. A key part of that mission is a certain type of delegated power and authority. Jesus delegates to His disciples His power and authority over demons. To Jesus, this delegated power and authority will be an important resource for His followers to engage in the mission He lays upon them. Yet many churches, ours included, sometimes act as if we disbelieve in the existence of demons and do not consider the delegated power of Jesus relevant to us fulfilling His mission. Please join with me in praying for the mission of our church in light of the spiritual opposition Jesus says we will meet and are meeting!
There are four ‘dynamics’ or ‘habits of being’ which we need to continually develop as a congregation and as persons. We need to be an inviting people — inviting people to know more about Jesus and inviting people to our church community. We need to be a connecting people — connecting people to God and connecting people with each other within our church community. We need to be a growing people — encouraging and equipping people to grow in their knowledge and love of the Gospel and the whole council of God and of God Himself. We need to be a doing people — not merely busy — but in the sense of Luke 8 that we are not mere hearers of the word of God but doers of the word of God who bear fruit for God’s glory.
Please pray daily that, in the name of Jesus, and by the authority He has delegated, God will: bind the demons which act against us inviting people to know about Jesus and come to Messiah; bind the demons which work against us connecting and growing and doing. Pray that God will grow in us a humble trusting knowledge of the greatness of Jesus which leads us to invite, connect and grow and do.
